Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
