Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
