Pickup Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
