Be clever, play clever, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
