Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
