Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
