Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
