Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play smart, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
