Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
