Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Plans: The History of Craps

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
