Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
