Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
