Be cunning, play clever, and learn how to play craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
