Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
