Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
