Master Craps – Pointers and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
