Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
