Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
