Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
