Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
