Be smart, play clever, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
