Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
