Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
