Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
