Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
