Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
