Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be cunning, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
