Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
