Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
