Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
