Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
