Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
