Master Craps – Pointers and Schemes: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
